THE HISTORY OF THE POUND

Weight pound has Roman roots. The word "pound" as a unit of weight or currency has roots in the Latin word Libra, meaning "weight" or "balance". Specifically, Libra Pondo meant "pound weight". This Latin origin is reflected in the pound's symbol (£) and the abbreviation for the unit of mass (lb). Historically, a pound was also equal to the value of a pound of silver. At the colonial times pound travelled from England to USA, and there it still is as a unit of weight... unfortunately ... from a European point of view :)
