CC vs CI - Converter Guide
In the US, you still see on Harley-Davidson's and Indian's engines 96ci, 107ci, 111ci, and so on. And most of us bikers from the rest of the world always try to remember how big or small those ci-engines are. Here you have a simpple table for those questions.
THE HISTORY OF THE CUBIC CENTIMETER
The Cubic Centimetre (cc) has its roots in France. The first practical realisation of the metric system was established in France in 1799, partly because of the Revolution of 1789. After the French Revolution, the existing system of measures had become impractical for trade. The metrication of France and much of Europe was complete by the 1850's.
In the new system, a cubic centimetre is a unit of volume that corresponds to the volume of a cube that measures 1 cm × 1 cm × 1 cm. The mass of one cubic centimetre of water at 3.98 °C is almost equal to one gram.
THE HISTORY OF THE CUBIC INCH
1 ci is 16,4 cc, and yes, a cubic inch is coming from Britain's Imperial System, which is from 1824.
In the US, the cubic inch was formerly used by the car industry through the early 1980's to express the sizes of car engines.
Today's Ford Mustang V8 5.0 is 302 ci in the old system. But the cubic inch is still used for this purpose when talking about vintage cars plus American new motorbikes, Harley Davidson, and Indian. The size of the 1st Harley Davidson's engine was 10,2 ci, and the 1st Indian's engine had 7,3 ci.
